Putting a spotlight on ordinary people doing extraordinary things is the best part of Eugene Kim‘s job.

“I think of My Modern Met as a big city that celebrates creativity. We feature a variety of topics, including art, design and photography, as well as science, history and environmental issues. We currently reach around 14 million unique visitors from around the globe every month.

My sister and I co-founded the blog in May, 2008. We started writing about topics that were interesting to us and shared the articles with our friends and family. It was a slow start but snowballed as we kept going. After a little while, strangers started sharing our content, and that was an amazing moment because we realized that we could scale this further than our own circle. And when we started seeing more traffic spikes, we knew we were onto something.

There‘s so much cynical content out there, and while there is a place for that, our mission is to create positive, uplifting content. And we can see that our audience is responding to that. We take an objective approach — we don‘t force opinions down people‘s throats; we show them something, and they can make up their own minds. And during challenging times, we believe our content becomes even more important because it can provide a source of happiness or inspiration that our audience may not be getting anywhere else. We‘re also happy to create funny or lighthearted content that can be a distraction from the challenges they may be facing.

I never imagined that this is what I would be doing for a living. This position never existed when I was growing up. The internet is so young, and it‘s really just the beginning. I feel as though we‘re in a very interesting place, being able to lead in the art and culture space of digital media. We see this as a responsibility, and it‘s something that we take very seriously — we want to make sure that we‘re representing artists appropriately and help promote their work.

We‘re working on a lot of different projects right now — we’ve built an e-commerce store, and we‘re collaborating with some of the best creative makers to promote their products. We just launched a podcast where we feature different artists who share their own experiences and struggles and explain how to become successful as creatives. One of the most exciting projects that we‘re about to launch is our e-learning platform, My Modern Met Academy. We‘re partnering with instructors in the creative space to teach classes on everything from how to create artwork, how to draw and create illustrations to how to take better photographs.

Our mission is to promote a positive creative culture by spotlighting the very best of humanity. We spotlight top artists around the world and celebrate ordinary people doing extraordinary things. Focusing on our mission guides us in creating our content.”
